Circe is a well-known figure in Greek mythology, and rediscovering her in a novel was a real pleasure because, deep down, she remains a character I appreciate, who remains interesting when I first discover her. I almost find it a shame that she is so rarely featured in most retellings.
Here, the author's pen captivated me from the very beginning and the discovery of her novel. We don't know when we are in it and the locations aren't the most precise in the world either, yet this doesn't harm the story in any way. Following Circe was a pleasure, as was discovering the potions she makes. They are all different, and the descriptions make you want to really discover them.
The characters are all interesting, the change of point of view didn't bother me even if some have difficulty with this element, preferring to follow a single character. I had a preference for Circe, but following the others allowed to realize certain subtleties, to see certain events differently. It's something that I appreciate, for my part, because I can understand the other characters, their actions, their choices much more easily.
I just wish the love story had been more developed, even though I'm familiar with the myth. Not especially on a physical level like some would expect, but with more elements compared to the latter. It remains quite sweet, which I liked, especially given some of the overly heated romances.
The rewriting of Circe is really well done here, we find what is important about her while having a more "contemporary" side in the vision of things. The universe in which we find ourselves is pleasant to discover and, as mentioned, this is also the case for the characters.
A nice surprise that I recommend to those looking for good mythological retellings. It wasn't a favorite, but I still didn't notice the time passing during my reading, which went smoothly, almost in one go!
Do you know Circe?
