The story appears to us in this novel, slightly out of the ordinary and which may pique the reader's curiosity. Historical fantasy is not commonplace, and it is a "genre" that nevertheless turns out to be quite interesting if it is well exploited. Here? It is, even if the language can be considered formal compared to what some children are used to reading. The names and expressions may be a little old, but if we take the time to explain them to them or if they inquire, they will quickly understand.
This period, although well-known in relation to the approaching Second World War, is less so in our country in relation to Mussolini, to what was happening in Italy. I had never really looked into it before discovering the novel and I find it fascinating, for my part, because we also see what was going on. The Blackshirts are a “good” example, especially since they were a few years before this war which would once again mark the world.
The discovery of inventors is also a very beautiful thing, the lesser known ones are highlighted and big names can be mentioned. At this level, the learning is done smoothly and I smiled at certain moments. As for the characters, they are interesting to follow even if, for me, there were many easy scripts... but I'm not the initial target, am I? For younger readers, it will go down well and I'm sure that if I had read it around 9-10 years old, it wouldn't have jumped out at me like that.
The author keeps us in suspense, however, throughout and makes the reader laugh. Clues are scattered everywhere, so you have to stay on your toes to discover them all, a bit like a treasure hunt. The pace ensures that there is no boredom, that you want to turn the pages and that's what I did to my great pleasure.
All in all, a very good read that could be used in various school subjects or just read for pleasure. I had a lovely time and I absolutely do not regret having immersed myself in it, having met Jane, this library and having immersed myself in this little-known era.
Do you plan to dive into it? Have you read other books based on this historical period?
