What if all the myths and legends were true?

Sun Akaya.

A name that she will bear alone, from now on.

Sun lived a normal student life, despite her difference and discomfort in the human world.

Indeed, she is half-human but above all half-goddess, with all the disadvantages that go with it.

It is precisely this aspect of her that will cause the loss of her family.

Betrayed and thirsty for revenge, she will have to flee in order to wait for the right moment to make those responsible pay: a group called Les Enfants du Soleil.

Along the way, Sun will find unlikely allies, all as excluded from their society as she is: a debauched vampire, a shapeshifter on the run, a dying goddess...

"In this life... Or in another, they will pay for it."

This is the promise she made to herself the day her life was turned upside down.

Even if it will have to lead her to kill the man she thought she loved.

From the first pages of Children of the Sun – Volume 1: Betrayed by Kat Thibault, I felt caught up in a universe that is modern, supernatural and profoundly human. There is something almost instinctive about this story, like a heartbeat that is a little irregular at first, but which ends up aligning itself with a familiar cadence. The prologue, quite hard-hitting, can give the impression of appearing out of nowhere, like a lightning bolt in the middle of a blue sky. However, this impression of initial imbalance gives all its relief to what follows: a sequence of more composed, more introspective chapters, where we learn to discover the characters, their world, and what they keep quiet.

The chapters are short, rhythmic, and each change of point of view is accompanied by an appreciable graphic care. The symbols, the headers... everything seems to be designed to immerse us in everyone's head, whether it's Sun, touching in her fragility and her mixed strength, or Zan, charismatic and complex. And that's something I really liked: the author's ability to give a voice of their own to everyone. At no time did I need to check who was speaking — the tones, the word choices, the reactions are quite distinct. And it gives a real consistency to the narration.

The writing is fluid, without unnecessary frills, with a touch of modernity that never falls into excess. There is even a certain poetry in some of the turns, discreet but there, which made me stop sometimes on a sentence, just to reread it and taste the rhythm. The narrative avoids heaviness, even when it comes to laying the foundations of a larger universe, or introducing supernatural elements. This may confuse some readers who prefer more direct explanations or more exposed worldbuilding, but personally, I liked this way of trusting the reader.

It's not a pure action read, although some scenes are lively and well done. Above all, it is an entry into a world under construction, where the unsaid, the feelings and the silences count as much as the dialogues. There is a delicate balance between the tangible and the imaginary, between what is shown and what remains to be discovered. And it works.

Of course, not everything is perfect: the beginning may seem too fast or blurry for some, and some sequences left me a little confused at times, for a moment. But that didn't stop me from getting attached to the characters, from wanting to turn the pages, from feeling that little twinge when the story is nearing its end... or rather, of its transition to the sequel.

Because yes, this volume 1 makes you want to continue. He promises, without saying too much, and sows enough seeds to make us want to see what will become of them. It's a novel that will surely speak to those who like hybrid universes, emotions on the edge, and stories that take the time to exist, without wanting to say everything right away.

So, will you also leave a place for the sun in your library?
